R.I.P. Jam Master Jay
On October 30, 2002, he was shot and killed in a Merrick Boulevard recording studio in Queens, New York. The other person in the room, twenty-three-year-old Urieco Rincon, was shot in the ankle and survived.
The New York Daily News reported that authorities have investigated whether Kenneth "Supreme" McGriff, a convicted drug dealer and longtime friend of Murder Inc. heads Irv Gotti and Chris Gotti, targeted Mizell because the DJ defied an industry blacklist of rapper 50 Cent that was imposed because of "Ghetto Qur'an", a song 50 Cent wrote about McGriff's drug history. A 2003 affidavit says: "Law enforcement agents are investigating the possibility that [Jason] Mizell was murdered for defying the blacklist of 50 Cent."
In April 2007, federal prosecutors named Ronald "Tenad" Washington as an accomplice in the murder of Mizell. Washington also is a suspect in the fatal shooting of Randy Walker in 1995, a close associate of the late rapper Tupac Shakur. For his part, Washington “pointed his gun at those present in the studio, ordered them to get on the ground and provided cover for his associate to shoot and kill Jason Mizell,” prosecutors said in court papers.
Mizell is survived by his wife Terri and three children. He is buried at the Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, New York. His favorite long brown leather trench coat was given to his best friends, Rev Run and DMC. Jam Master Jay was 37 when he died.

Max B free from Byrd Gang Records....
Source XXL
Max B. and Jim Jones have been engaged in a battle of words for some time now. But it looks like things could get pretty interesting moving forward. The “Silver Surfer” rapper is now free from his Byrd Gang contract with Jones, XXLmag.com has learned.
“I’m as free as a bird,” the rapper told XXLmag.com exclusively. “Now it gives me the ability to ride without no remorse, no sympathy, no pity. I’m riding on everything. I’m riding. I’ma ride on my rivalry for the season. It’s gonna be so wavy. So big, so heavy, so controversial. It’s gonna be like none other.
“I’m gonna speak about everything, Jim Jones,” Max continued. “I got more deep, down, dark secrets.”
The rapper said he was able to get out of his contract through legal negotiations. He explained he’s received paper work from the New York Secretary of State that prevents Jones from pursuing legal action against Max B. in the future. He’s recognized as Persona Suri Juris.
“I’m not even part of the U.S. Government laws,” Max B. said. “I’m not a citizen of the United States, I’m dead ass. My laws, the laws you go by, I don’t have to follow. As long as I don’t purposely hurt nobody, I’m straight.”
The rapper said his next move is to release a mixtape and a DVD. The DVD, “Animal House,” will chronicle Max’s past year and his tribulations. The mixtape is the final in the “Public Domain” series.
PD5, according to Max, will include up to 15 original tracks and a few freestyles. The rapper said he’s ready to start a bidding war between record labels for his services. For his next album, he hopes to collaborate with the likes of Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, and Nelly Furtado.
“I’m gonna be 10 times better than [Jim Jones] ever was,” Max said.—Anthony Thomas, with reporting by Jayson Rodriguez

Nature - Pain Killer
Nature first came to the world's attention in the mid-90s doing intros for DJ Clue's mixtapes, solo and alongside early mentor/rival Nas, and his notoriety peaked with his collaborations with Nas, AZ & Foxy Brown as The Firm, although ongoing collaborations and associations with Tragedy Khadafi, Mobb Deep, Cormega, Capone & Noreaga have kept his fanbase aware of his presense in the game. He returns to the arena with "Pain Killer", a lethal injection to the stale state of Hip Hop in 2008, a seamless sequence of deft lyrical deliveries over innovative beats. His debut on Columbia "For All Seasons" is considered a classic by many Rap fans, alongside "Illmatic", "Ready to Die" and "Reasonable Doubt", as one of those early '90s full lengths that succeeds start to finish. This new album, evidence that Nature has not been growing stale since his last release, is a showcase of today's up-and-coming beatmakers, anchored by more seasoned producers Dub Sonata and Scram Jones. Nature's confidence is evident by his sparing use of guests that compliment his style; N.O.R.E., Prodigy, Doo Wop and Kool G Rap each provide a verse here or there, as well as a rare microphone appearance by board man Scram Jones himself. The effect is a return to "Illmatic" - era albums, with the focus being the emcee, rather than the crew, and it's a quality listen.

The Beatnuts - U.F.O. Files (Unreleased Joints)
After a four-year hiatus The Beatnuts are back. Today, the Queens-bred hip-hop group/production duo are dropping a collection of unreleased material called the U.F.O Files.
While The Nuts haven’t released a full-length album since 2004’s Milk Me, JuJu and Psycho Les are planning to make up for it by releasing the collection of unreleased songs and remixes and following that up with a brand new album in 2009.
“It’s just a bunch of joints that I just had over the years just in the closet, I’m just putting them out,” Les told SOHH. “A lot of people are requesting that. They want that 90s sh*t.”
Les assures fans there is no shortage of material.
“As far as these U.F.O Files I got like three more of these albums to drop,” he said. There’s so much unreleased sh*t that we just did.”
Les insists that the old tracks are just intended to get Beatnuts fans ready for the new album, Planet of the Crates, that will be released on his Universal Records imprint, Pit Fight. “It’s just like little appetizers until the real meal comes,” he explained.
Planet of the Crates will tentatively be released in April 2009. “It’s gonna be hard, hardcore, back to the streets, hard hardcore beats,” Psycho Les said of the new album. “The beats is just real ugly.”
The U.F.O. Files can be purchased at all major online outlets now.

"Nuclear Winter represents many things. It represents dark times in our lives, it represents the state of NY hip hop & how I feel about it, & it represents my blueprint on how I think the music should be done going forward into the future. This is my manifesto to all the people that doubted me & the kryptonite to all selfishness. It's a journey from darkness into light, & from bondage & the huge amounts of weight on our shoulders to breaking free and regaining our freedom. Nuclear Winter we're coming to take shine....." - Willie Maze
