(Review) Asher Roth - Asleep In The Bread Aisle
Let me start off by saying, I'm going into this review with an extreme bias. I got my riot gear on. Why? You ask? I'm hoping this Asher Roth CD puts up a helluva fight and makes me a believer. If you haven't heard of this kid then obviously you don't frequent the internet too often. Asher Roth is the new age Hip Hop blogger poster child.
When Steve Rifkind made the outrageous statement that this Asher Roth record would be "One of the top 5 groundbreaking Hip Hop albums of all time...." it finally put Asher on my radar. Steve is responsible for one of the greatest Hip Hop catalogs (Loud Records) of all time. So when he said that, I had to see what all the hype was about. That being said, the bar is now set so high that Asher may have lost this fight without me having heard 1 second of this record.
When I first heard "Lark On My Go-Kart" I said to myself "WTF is this?" but after listening to the album in its entirety I'm able to gauge where Asher is as an artist a bit better. Regardless I'm already lost cause I don't know wtf "Lark On My Go-Kart" means, so I looked it up haha. Lark - a merry, carefree adventure; frolic; escapade. Makes sense. Whatever, on to the next record.
"Blunt Cruisin'" I'm kinda upset I decided to review this album right now. After having "Lark On My Go-Kart" on repeat as I'm writing this review the monotone flow is already wearing on me. Next. "I Love College" is the first single. This song is cool. One thing I can appreciate so far is the different perspective Asher brings. I suppose that's what part of the hype is. My whole thing is, is it genuine or just a gimmick? Next is "La Di Da", now the production is getting on my nerves. WTF is this? I'm waiting for the Brady Bunch to pop up outta nowhere.
"Be By Myself (Feat. Cee-Lo)" May be the first record I like. Cee-Lo breaks the monotony a bit, but at this point I want to throw my keyboard out the window. Is Asher capable of displaying any emotion?!. I hope he doesn't plan on spitting in the same tone for the rest of the record. "She Don't Wanna Man" OK I take that back, THIS is actually the first record I heard that I like. Did I just hear a "Planet Rock" influenced flow? Ok, props for that. I may actually rewind this.
"Sour Patch Kids" Didn't I hear this song already? Next. "As I Em" I like this, Bob Marley kinda flavor and he's touchin' upon all the Eminem comparisons. Cool. He switches up his tone a bit so it's tolerable.
At this point I'm done with the record. I did listen to it in its entirety several times but I'll let you determine your thoughts on the rest of the record, but to me it was pretty uneventful. I feel like Asher has a long way to grow as an artist. There was absolutely no emotion, no passion on this record. If all he has to lean on is keg stands and beer pong he won't be around next year.

(News) NY Daily News does story on Queens Hip Hop
The cry of "Queens is in the house!" just gained new resonance.
Last night, the undisputed kings of Queens hip hop, Run-D.M.C., were inducted into music's most exclusive house: The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They're only the second hip-hop act to make the grade (Grand Master Flash earned the inaugural nod in 2007).
While Flash hailed from hip hop's original home, the Bronx, in the '70s, groups from Queens lifted the genre to a far more sophisticated and moneyed level a decade later.

It represents dark times in our lives, it represents the state of NY hip hop & how I feel about it, & it represents my blueprint on how I think the music should be done going forward into the future. It's a journey from darkness into light, & from bondage & the huge amounts of weight on our shoulders to breaking free and regaining our freedom.
